Fame represents a character's presence in the IC world and that world's knowledge of said character. After completing any noteworthy task (such as completing a mission, defending the village, capturing a criminal, ect), they acquire fame. As they accumulate fame, word of their deeds spreads across the land as well as their name, appearance, and eventually some of their more flashy techniques. 0-100 Fame - Essentially a nobody. Only people who have personally met this individual can know anything about them.
100-500 - This shinobi has begun to make a name for themselves. Locals in their village may have been told of their good deeds from neighbors and satisfied customers.
500-1000 - Typically achieved around the rank of chunnin. Most people within the individual's village or area of residence know their name and face. Peers and instructors alike know some of their capabilities, such as combat style and commonly used jutsu.
1000-2000 - The shinobi begins to stand out amongst their peers and has become a notable member of their community. Ninja within the country but not of the village may know of any titles or aliases they may have as may shinobi of their village's allies.
2000-3000 - Shinobi of allied villages know even the individual's name and some of their common techniques. Their aliases and word of their ferocity on the battlefield have made it to enemies of the village, fueling their fear. Additionally not a sole in the village doesn't know them.
3000-4000 - The individual's appearance and common techniques are known to enemies of the village in case they ever meet you on the battlefield. Some within the village bring up their name when the topic of the next kage comes up.
5000 - The shinobi's name and common techniques are know to all in the land as they've become a legend. Their name becomes history and their titles strike fear into the hearts of any on the opposing side. In most cases, fame can be rejected in order to keep a low profile, so to speak. This can only be done if any characters you're in the thread with agree not to speak of your presence there and no one else was around to see. Killing all witnesses in a battle can negate a fame gain if the character so chooses. Fame from missions can even be rejected, but all of this is done through plot devices (such as asking to have your name stricken from the records of a completed mission). Infamy is acquired just like fame and works very similarly. However instead of simply representing the world's knowledge of you, it represents your character's criminal nature. Now you might be thinking "but my character isn't a criminal". Well this system is still important to know as it affects the IC world like so. 0 Infamy - The average citizen or shinobi should find themselves with 0 infamy. While no one is perfect, these ninja have resisted the temptations of evil.
1-100 - Considered petty criminals, these shinobi have a minor criminal nature. They are not hunted but are greeted with untrusting eyes. Village shinobi of this class are reprimanded frequently and missing nin are often chased off.
100-300 - These shinobi have proven that they are dedicated to the criminal life style. Village shinobi are either exiled or imprisoned for their crimes. Missing nin are hunted by their own villages.
300-499 - Having this much bad rep and still being a member of a village is all but impossible unless your village too has sworn to the ways of evil. Shinobi of this class are seen as a threat and are hunted or killed on sight to be returned to their home village and rid the world of one more problem.
500 - Considered the worst of the worst, shinobi with this much infamy are considered threats to the world. While they are to be killed on sight, their names are often left out of bingo books to avoid raising the body count. Acquiring fame and infamy are simple and easy. Whenever you've completed a task (or are witness to one) which you feel is deserving of one of these, simply post in the staff assistance subforum with a link to the thread and a description and a staff member will grade it. Additionally missions often reward fame.
