In the Naruto universe, modern-day jutsu can be classified into one of eight styles. Each style can have a wide range of uses but encompasses a single theme or method of activation in one way or another. Every character has no limit to how many styles they may know, so long as they have the slots to support trees within those styles. Styles such as Ninjutsu, Taijutsu, Bukijutsu, and Skills which have multiple elements or styles do not take up slots but each element or fighting style learned takes up a slot. Styles such as Genjutsu, Ijutsu, Fuuinjutsu, and Puppetry which only have one real application take up slots by themselves. - Ninjutsu: Essentially basic magic. Utilizing the body's innate chakra, ninjas can create amazing feats such as shooting fireballs from their mouths, imbuing themselves with lightning to move at incredible speeds, or even camouflaging themselves. Ninjutsu techniques are all physical techniques that, while often elemental, do not need to be.
- Genjutsu: Illusion-based jutsu. Genjutsu traps the opponent in the world of imagination. They can be as subtle as a ringing in the ears or a blur in their vision or they can be far more drastic, such as the world around them collapsing or a giant demon chasing and eating them. While genjutsu may not have as many sub-styles as ninjutsu, it is not to be underestimated.
- Taijutsu: Pure physical combat. Taijutsu encompasses the art of engaging in direct and unarmed combat. Taijutsu practitioners can move fast, hit hard, and even fortify their techniques with chakra to add devastating effects.
- Bukijutsu: Taijutsu's brother, bukijutsu is the art of weapon-based combat. Swords, kunai, bows, and war axes, bukijutsu practitioners prefer a little assistance when engaging in melee combat as opposed to their taijutsu counterparts.
- Ijutsu: Ijutsu is better known as the medical arts. Initially these techniques are intended to recover and heal wounds but, in the right hands, they can be used to cause devastating and unrivaled havoc upon an opponent.
- Fuuinjutsu: The sealing arts have a wide range of uses. Compact weapon storage, advanced traps, buffs, debuffs, and much more. The potential of the sealing arts is nearly limitless.
- Kugutsu: Better known as puppetry, users of the Kugutsu technique control life-sized partially mechanized dolls known as puppets via chakra strings, standing back and having the complex devices fight for them.
- Skills: Skills are a unique class of jutsu in multiple ways. Skills are classified as any type of technique that cannot fit under one of the other seven styles, such as telekinesis, telepathy, raw elemental kinesis, or Zetsu's Mayfly technique from canon. Skills can either be a single technique or an entire tree of techniques.
- Selfish: A common sub-class of techniques, these are typically unique to an individual as they are either self created or once self created and since passed down only by those whom have been taught. While they don't always, they typically include a combination of multiple styles, often making them hard to learn as several conditions have to be right in an individual. As such, most selfish techniques are lost in history, typically only known by one or two people.
