When approaching combat, there are a few seemingly simple things one must keep in mind: Approach every situation with logic and reason, do not meta-game (know things your character could not) and, above all else, be fair. If we promote an environment where RPers play fair and allow hits on their character to land when the other has earned it, combat will become less tense and more fun. But these simple rules are not enough for some, so allow me to go more in depth with each one.
Logic is important. A character cannot jump ten meters to their right at a dead standstill. Someone at point-blank range probably won't block an attack from a character six times faster than them unless they had ample time to see it coming. You can't fire off fifteen hand seals in half a second. Every action your character takes must be made with logic and reason. Time will have no definite measure in RP and will instead be based relatively based on post content, differing from post-to-post to avoid weighing down the site with too many systems.Just try your best to be reasonable and fair and, hopefully there shouldn't be a problem.
Meta-gaming is a big thing. While you as an RPer will undoubtedly have more information than your character has, acting upon this information is a punishable offense. This means dodging hidden attacks, knowing a character's exact weakness, or entering a fight you should have no knowledge of. This does not mean that every hidden attack will hit and that you can never exploit weaknesses or join fights later in the game. It just means that you must do so with the subject of the above paragraph: Logic. Sometimes people might legitimately miss traps or perhaps your character saw the shimmer of those hidden kunai. Maybe your character just happens to use the element their opponent is weak against the most. Or perhaps a fight in your village was loud enough that you overheard and came to the aid. Whatever you do, everything must be backed up with some form of IC knowledge or reasoning.
When utilizing jutsu, it is important to include the jutsu and its rank in a spoiler at the end of your post, as well as highlighting any other abilities presently active and keeping a tally of your chakra usage. This makes things easier for everyone as all the information needed is right in front of you. Techniques are freeform, leaving it open ended for you to decide what your character can do (after choosing your styles, releases, kekkei genkai, and everything else, of course). As long as you have the chakra, skill, and power required to use a specific jutsu or pull of some custom feat, it can be done. However we still ask to maintain a sense of balance here, as a samurai who uses lightning exclusively to channel it through his blade should not be calling down thunderstorms. This isn't to say those two things can't be done on the same character, as long as you go for a ninjutsu elementalist build rather than more of a nintaijutsu build. It's all in the writing and planning.
