A character's title represents their standing in the IC world. Seven titles exist and, while a character's rank does not determine their strength, it is often representative of their strength (showing how much they've earned). Ranks grant a number of benefits. Every new character (unless given special permission) must begin at the rank of genin and work their way up the ladder. - Genin: Genin are fresh ninja just out of the academy most often. Still, some of the more lazy individuals retain this title throughout their whole life, even fewer doing so while greatly exceeding the relative "power-level" of this rank. Genin are often thrown into teams of three, headed by a Chuunin or Jounin sensei. They may only take on missions of up to C-rank. All characters begin as Genin unless given special permission.
- Chuunin: Mid-level shinobi. Chuunin have proven themselves and have earned a bit of responsibility. They may head Genin teams and oversee exams and other village tests. Chuunin can take on missions of up to B-rank and even accompany Jounin on A-ranked missions. To obtain Chuunin, one must either pass the Chuunin exams or acquire 5,000 EXP and Kage approval.
- Special Jounin: A unique title given to few. Special Jounin have all the skill of Jounin but choose to specialize in one specific field rather than spreading out their skills more widely. They can take on up to A-ranked missions in teams and can head Genin teams and oversee exams. To obtain Special Jounin, one must be Chuunin rank, acquire 3,000 EXP, and pass a special test delegated by the Kage.
- Jounin: For most shinobi, Jounin's the limit. The senior shinobi of a village, Jounin are in charge of defense as well as offensive maneuvers and important tasks. Jounin can take on up to S-ranked missions in groups and frequently head Genin teams. To obtain Jounin, one must be either Chuunin or Special Jounin, 5,000 EXP, and Kage approval.
- Kage: The leader and face of a village. Kages accept missions from the people of the country, designate the methods and tactics used to train the shinobi of their village, and make big decisions. Each village has a single Kage at a time. Kages are unrestricted in the missions they can take. To obtain Kage, one must claim the title IC. This can be done from defeating the previous kage, conquering a village, being elected, having the position handed down, or any other creative way.
- Sannin: A title given out to fewer than the Kage. While it once meant "Three Ninja", the title has since become more symbolic of the respect the shinobi has gained and the level of power they have reached. Sannin are often comparable to Kage in terms of raw strength and, as such, are unrestricted in missions they can take. To obtain Sannin, one must only be a Jounin and obtain both Kage and Admin approval.
- Missing Nin: Missing nin are ninja whom have either deserted their villages or were born outside of one. They have no code of law other than their own and, as such, have no ranks and are not restricted in what rank of missions they can take. This is a double edged sword as missing nin can begin raking in large amounts of EXP quickly but they have a heightened risk of death if they choose a mission outside their ability to complete.
